Filing a paper T1 return in Canada

How a paper T1 return is mailed in Canada, and why the tax centre depends on your province.

Updated Nov 2, 2026

Pop Books does not have the T1 return built yet, and it does not file anything for you. This article explains how paper filing works so you can do it yourself with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) forms.

What you do

  1. Get the T1 General form for your province or territory and the schedules you need from canada.ca.
  2. Fill it in with the figures from your books. Your reports and tax-line totals show where each figure comes from.
  3. Sign and date the return. If you are filing for a spouse or common-law partner, each of you signs your own.
  4. Attach the slips and papers the forms ask for, and keep a copy.
  5. Mail it to the tax centre that serves your province or territory.

Where to mail it

The tax centre depends on where you live and on whether you enclose a payment. Pop Books does not list the addresses, because they change. Look up the current one on the CRA page "Where to mail your return" on canada.ca.

Paying and the deadline

Most individuals file by April 30. Self-employed people usually have until June 15 to file, but any tax owing is still due by April 30. Check canada.ca for this year's dates and for ways to pay.

You can also file online through software that the CRA has approved. Pop Books is never one of them.

Pop Books is software. It does not act as a tax preparer and does not give tax or legal advice. You are responsible for what you file.
