Uploading your Indian income-tax return yourself
How you file an ITR on the income-tax e-filing portal yourself, and how e-verification works.
Updated Nov 2, 2026
In India you file your return yourself on the income-tax e-filing portal at incometax.gov.in. Pop Books does not file for you. The ITR forms are not built in Pop Books yet. When they are, it will produce the return as a JSON file for you to upload. Until then, use your books and reports for the figures.
The steps on the portal
- Sign in at incometax.gov.in with your PAN.
- Choose the assessment year and the ITR form that fits your income. The portal can guide you.
- Either fill in the return online, or download the offline utility from the portal, fill it in there, and generate its JSON file.
- Upload the JSON file on the portal if you used the offline utility. Check the summary the portal shows before you submit.
- Submit the return.
E-verify within the deadline
A return stays incomplete until you e-verify it. You can do this with Aadhaar OTP, net banking, a demat account, a bank account EVC, or a digital signature. The time allowed after submitting is limited, so check the current period on the portal and do it straight away.
The deadline
The due date for most individuals is 31 July after the financial year. It is different for those who need an audit. Check the portal for the date that applies to you.
Pop Books is software. It does not act as a tax preparer and does not give tax or legal advice. You are responsible for what you file.
