Checked against Pop Dispatch 0.1.0

On the hosted plan, Pop Street runs the Pop Dispatch server for you. You will be able to sign in from any browser or app at your own address, know how your data is protected, ask for a copy of it, and move to a server of your own whenever you choose.

Before you start #

  • Your account name and owner email, which Pop Street used to create your account.
  • Your licence, which hosted accounts check the same way every other Pop Dispatch server does.

What hosting includes #

  1. Your own address. Your account answers at https://<your account name>.dispatch.thepopstreet.com. Every browser, phone and the Mac and Windows apps connect there.
  2. A secure connection. Every page and call uses https, with a certificate that renews by itself.
  3. Updates. Pop Street installs new versions of the server. An update starts the new version beside the old one, checks it, and switches over only when it answers correctly, so people keep working.
  4. Your own data. Each account's records and files are kept apart from every other account's, and the server checks the account on every request.
  5. Backups. See below.

How your data is backed up #

  1. Each night the server makes a full backup and a separate backup of your account alone.
  2. Each backup is encrypted before it leaves the server. The key that opens it stays offline with Pop Street, away from the hosting server.
  3. Copies go to a second location that Pop Street controls. Backups are kept for 30 days.
  4. The server also makes its own nightly backup inside your data, which you can see under Settings, Backup. See "Backups and restore".

If something goes wrong with your account, Pop Street restores your account alone from the latest backup. Other accounts keep running while that happens. Passwords stay in place when the restore comes from the nightly encrypted backup.

Get a copy of your data #

  1. Open Settings, Backup and choose to back up now. The list shows the backup with its size and time. See "Backups and restore".
  2. For a complete copy that includes your stored photos and signatures, ask Pop Street. Say that you want a copy of your account's data. Pop Street opens your latest encrypted account backup, checks it and sends it to the owner's email address on the account.
  3. QuickBooks export files are yours to run at any time. See "QuickBooks exports (IIF and Online CSV)".

Move to your own server #

  1. Ask Pop Street for a copy of your account's data, as above.
  2. Set up your own server. See "Setting up the office server".
  3. Put the copy in place with dispatch-server restore --from <backup folder> --data-dir <data folder>.
  4. Run dispatch-server reset-password --tenant <account> --user <email> for each person, starting with the owners, and set up each authenticator app again. See "Backups and restore".
  5. Point your phones and apps at the new address. Tell Pop Street the day you switch, so the hosted account can be closed.
Technical details
  • One server program serves all hosted accounts from one database, with a tenant guard on every query. Each account is a tenant of that database.
  • Hosted updates alternate between two local ports. Caddy forwards to the active port, and the previous instance stops a few seconds after the switch.
  • Certificates are requested on first visit to an account's address, and only for account names Pop Street has registered.
  • Backup files are named psd-full-<time>.tar.age and psd-tenant-<account>-<time>.tar.age. They are age-encrypted tar files holding the database rows of the account (tenant.sql), a row count per table and the account's files.

If something goes wrong #

  • The address does not open: check the spelling of your account name. If it is right, contact Pop Street and give the time you tried.
  • You can sign in to the wrong account: sign out and use the address that carries your own account name.
  • The copy you received does not restore: ask for the previous night's copy and tell Pop Street the message you saw.
