# E-invoices and the IRN
If your business must issue e-invoices, each invoice and credit note gets an Invoice Reference Number (IRN) from the government portal. Pop Books does not connect to the portal. It makes the request file and keeps the answer.
Steps
- Save your GSTIN and turn on My business must issue e-invoices in Setup.
- Issue the invoice as usual.
- Open India: GST, TDS and payroll files, E-invoice and e-way, choose the document and press E-invoice request file. Read the problems. Fix them in the invoice.
- Download the file and upload it on the invoice registration portal.
- Copy what the portal gives back. Paste it under Paste back the e-invoice response and press Save the IRN.
Afterwards
The IRN, acknowledgement number and date are kept with the document and can appear on the printed invoice. If you cancel the IRN on the portal, tell your adviser; cancel the invoice in Pop Books with a credit note as usual.
Whether you must issue e-invoices depends on your turnover and the current rules. Ask your adviser.
