Checked against Pop Dispatch 0.1.0

When the old computer is gone, a copy in Pop Vault brings the business back. You sign in, choose a copy, download it and type your recovery key. Pop Vault is free for the first year, then $29 a year per licence. It keeps 1 to 3 copies.

Before you start #

  • Have your recovery key. The files are encrypted with your business recovery key, and a restore needs that key. If it is lost, read "Lost recovery key and Pop Vault".
  • Use the email of your thepopstreet.com account.
  • Do this on the computer the server runs on.

On a new computer, during setup #

  1. Open the setup pages. On Welcome, choose Restore from a backup.
  2. Under Where the backup is, choose From Pop Vault.
  3. Type your email, select Email me a code, then type the code and select Sign in.
  4. Choose the copy to bring back. The list shows when each was made, which computer made it and its size.
  5. Select Download this copy. A bar shows the progress. If the connection drops, choose the copy and select the button again: the download carries on from where it stopped. The finished file is checked against Pop Vault's record.
  6. Type your recovery key and select Restore this copy. Keep the page open until it says Backup restored.
  7. Each owner needs a new password, because backups hold no passwords. Run the command shown for each owner on the server, then open the address again and sign in.

A wrong recovery key says so and keeps the download, so you can type the key again without downloading the file a second time.

On a server that already has data #

A business that already has data is restored with the server stopped.

  1. Open Settings, then Backups. On the Pop Vault card, open Restore from Pop Vault and choose a copy.
  2. Select Download this copy. It goes into your backup folder.
  3. Type your recovery key and select Check my recovery key.
  4. Stop the server and run the command shown. Your current data is kept in a folder beside the restored data.
Technical details
  • Downloads use a Range request, so a stopped download continues from the bytes already saved in the .part file.
  • During setup the Pop Vault sign-in stays in memory only. After a restore the computer has a different data key, so sign in to Pop Vault again from Settings, then Backups, to carry on copying.
  • Setup restore works only from the computer the server runs on, and only while the server has no business.
  • Routes: /setup/vault/* for setup and /backup/vault/download for Settings, listed in docs/pop-vault-api-client.md.

If something goes wrong #

  • The key did not open the copy: check each character. The recovery key is for the computer the copy came from.
  • The download stopped: select the copy and Download this copy again.
  • The downloaded file does not match: Pop Vault's record and the file disagree, so the file was thrown away. Download it again.
  • No copies in the list: the plan may have lapsed before a copy went up. Ask thepopstreet.com.
