Checked against Pop Dispatch 0.1.0

Your business has one locale. You will be able to set the currency, distance and volume units, date and time formats and digit grouping, and understand how Pop Dispatch stores the figures behind them.

Everyone in the business sees and types figures in these units. Underneath, Pop Dispatch keeps canonical units so a change of display never alters a stored record.

Before you start #

  • You need the owner role to change the locale. Anyone with access can read it.
  • Pick a country preset first if none is saved yet. See fleet-overview-and-setup.

Steps #

  1. Read your settings with GET /settings/locale. The answer lists currency_code, distance_unit, volume_unit, date_format, time_format, number_grouping, time_zone, ui_language, week_start and currency_locked.
  2. Change a field with PATCH /settings/locale. Each field takes these values:
    • distance_unit: km or mi
    • volume_unit: l, gal_us or gal_uk
    • date_format: mdy, dmy or ymd
    • time_format: 12h or 24h
    • number_grouping: intl or indian
    • currency_code: one of USD, CAD, AUD, NZD, GBP, EUR, INR, AED, SGD, ZAR
    • time_zone: a time zone name such as Asia/Kolkata
  3. Read the settings again to confirm. New figures, documents and exports use the new formats.

How figures appear #

  • Dates print as 10/28/2026 (mdy), 28/10/2026 (dmy) or 2026-10-28 (ymd). Typed dates follow the same order, and the year-first form YYYY-MM-DD is also accepted.
  • Times print as 2:05 PM with 12h and 14:05 with 24h.
  • intl grouping writes 1,234,567. indian grouping writes 12,34,567: the last three digits, then pairs.
  • Amounts show the currency symbol, the grouping you chose and two decimals.

Currency locks after the first invoice or payment #

Once the business has an invoice or a payment, the currency stays as it is. GET /settings/locale then shows currency_locked: true. Choose the currency during set-up, before billing starts. Every other locale field remains open to change.

Technical details
  • Money is stored as integer minor units with a currency code. The currency table covers currencies with two minor digits.
  • Distance is stored in metres, fuel volume in millilitres, engine hours in hundredths of an hour, tread depth in tenths of a millimetre and tyre pressure in kilopascals.
  • A person types distance in the asset's unit and Pop Dispatch converts it exactly. One mile is 1,609.344 metres. A US gallon is 3,785.411784 millilitres and an imperial gallon is 4,546.09 millilitres. Conversions round half away from zero.
  • The United Kingdom preset pairs miles with litres, which is why volume is its own setting.
  • Exports follow the receiving system: a QuickBooks file keeps MM/DD/YYYY dates and two-decimal amounts whatever your display format.
  • Each save of the locale also adds the document types for the chosen country.

If something goes wrong #

  • validation_failed (422) with the field name: the value is outside the lists above. The message names the allowed values.
  • validation_failed (422) with fields: ["currency_code"]: the code is outside the supported list.
  • validation_failed (422) with fields: ["time_zone"]: use a name from the international time zone database, such as Europe/London.
  • conflict (409): the currency is locked because an invoice or payment exists. Keep the current currency.
