# Price lists and discount schemes

Open Price lists under Sales. The screen has two views: Price lists and Discount schemes.

Price lists

A price list holds a price for each item, such as a wholesale list or a retail list. Choose New list, give it a name and a kind, then Add a price for each item. Items without a price in the list are sold at their own price from Stock.

  • Quantity tiers. Add a second price for the same item with a From quantity. A wholesale list can say 20.00 each, and 18.00 each from 10 units. The tier with the highest starting quantity that the order reaches is used.
  • Currency. A list is in one currency and is used only on documents in that currency. A list left without a currency uses your own.
  • Switching off. A list you switch off stops being used. Its prices stay on file.

Which price a line gets

Pop Books looks in this order and takes the first price it finds:

  1. The price list picked at the top of the invoice, quote, sales order or proforma.
  2. The customer's default list. Open a list and choose Give it to a customer.
  3. The item's own sale price.

When you pick an item on a document, the price fills in for that customer, quantity and date. A small note under it names the list and any scheme. Change the quantity and the price follows, unless you have typed a price yourself.

Discount schemes

A scheme takes a percent off an item, or every item, from a quantity, between a start date and an end date. Both dates count. Examples: Buy 10 get 5% off, or Diwali 10% from the 8th to the 12th.

When several schemes fit a line, the biggest percent wins. If two schemes give the same percent, the one with the higher priority wins. A scheme can be tied to one price list, and then it applies only when that list is in force. The price never goes below zero.

At the till

Open a list and choose Use on the till and the till shows and sells at that list's prices. Schemes apply at the till as the line discount, with the list price kept on the receipt record, and the cashier needs no override permission for them. A price or discount typed by hand still needs the till override permission.

Who can do what

  • Anyone who can see lists can see prices and get a price for a line.
  • Making lists, prices and schemes needs the permission to change setup.
  • Giving a customer a default list needs the permission to change contacts.

What has not been tried

Prices on a document are filled in when you pick the item or change the quantity. A document already saved keeps the price it has. A till working on its own copy of the catalogue shows list prices but takes schemes only when it reaches the main books.
