The Windows app: installing and updates

How the Windows app installs and updates itself, and what has only been checked by automatic tests.

Updated Nov 2, 2026

Pop Books also runs as a Windows app. There is one installer for ordinary PCs (x64) and one for ARM PCs. Both open the same company files as the Mac app.

Installing

  1. Run the installer for your kind of PC.
  2. It installs only for you. It does not ask for an administrator password.
  3. Windows may show a SmartScreen warning that the program is from an unknown publisher. The installers are not yet signed with a Windows certificate, so this is expected for now. Only install a file you got from Pop Books.

Updates

The app tells you when a new version is available. The update bar offers:

  • Restart and install, which installs now.
  • Install when I quit, a switch that installs when you next close the app.

Before an update is installed, the app checks that it is signed by Pop Books, that its size and checksum match, and that your update plan covers that release. A release outside your update plan is never offered. A file that fails a check has not been run.

Make a backup before a big update. See backups-snapshots.

Moving around

The side menu, the jump bar and Ctrl plus a number reach the same screens as the web version, including Insights, Practice, Stock, Payroll, Till, Receipts and Devices and sync. Dark mode follows Windows.

What has only been checked by automatic tests

Nothing here has been used by a person on a Windows machine yet.

  • The app was built and started by an automatic test on a computer running Windows. The first start, consent and Home screen worked there.
  • The ARM version was built but has never been started.
  • The installer has never been run by a person: not install, never a quiet update, not Install when I quit, not uninstall. The update download has not been tried against the real update feed.
  • Screen reader reading, dark and high-contrast looks and the smallest window size have not been checked.
  • Devices and sync shows a list only. Pairing a device is done from the Mac app for now.
  • Newer menu rows have never been seen on Windows.
