The Outbox tab shows what your phone saved while it had no signal and what the office refused. You will be able to see what waits, read why an item could not be sent, then edit it, send it again or discard it.

Before you start #

  • You are signed in on the driver app.
  • The app keeps its own pages on the phone, so it opens without a signal.
  • Open the Outbox from the status pill at the top of any tab. The pill reads "{n} waiting to send", "{n} could not be sent" or "Everything is sent".

How sending works #

  • Each save carries its own key, so a repeat after a lost answer runs once.
  • Items go one at a time, in the order you made them. A wait stops the run, so the order holds.
  • A network failure, a time-out, a busy office system or a server fault makes the app try again with growing waits of 30 seconds, 1 minute, 2 minutes and so on up to 15 minutes. The item shows "Tried {n} times. It will try again soon."
  • When the office refuses an item (a 4xx answer), the item moves to Could not be sent and stays there with the office's words. Nothing leaves that list until you act on it.
  • Photos stay with their item, so a job photo or a receipt photo goes when the signal returns.

Steps #

  1. Open the Outbox. Items that Could not be sent come first, then items Waiting to send.
  2. Read the line "Why:" on each failed item. It names the cause in words, such as "Your sign-in ended. Sign in again, then press Send again."
  3. To send an item as it stands, press Send again.
  4. To change what you typed, press Edit. You can change the volume, the total, the amount, the odometer, the reading, the station, the note, the summary, the purpose, From, To, the signer's name and a caption. Press Save and send, or Cancel. A money field that cannot be read shows "{field} needs a valid number."
  5. To remove an item, press Discard and confirm with Yes, discard. The page warns "Discard this? It will not be sent." When other items depend on it, such as a trip end that waits for its trip start, they go too, and the page says how many.
  6. For items waiting to send, press Send now to try at once.
  7. Check the pill. When it reads "Everything is sent", the office has all of your work.

When an item has no Edit button #

Items that hold no typed field, such as a job step, show "This one cannot be edited here. Discard it and enter it again."

Technical details
  • Each queued request has its own Idempotency-Key. A repeat returns the first answer, and keys are scoped to the person. Requests made by someone else on the same phone stay untouched.
  • Retried statuses: network failure, 408, 429 and 5xx. A 401 stops the run and shows the sign-in message. Every other 4xx is kept as failed with the server's code and message.
  • A request that uses the id of an earlier waiting request (a trip end after a trip start) waits for it and shows "Waits for an earlier item to be sent."
  • A save made while an older item waits joins the line, so requests never overtake each other.
  • POST /batch (1 to 20 operations, each with key, method, path and optional body) serves other clients. Paths refused in a batch: /batch, anything under /auth, and any path ending in /photos. Changes come back with GET /sync.

If something goes wrong #

  • "The office system could not be reached." The item waits and tries again.
  • "The office system is busy. It will try again."
  • "This phone has no room to keep it. Free some space and try again." Discard old items or free space on the phone.
  • "The business has used all its file storage. Tell the office." (storage_quota_exceeded, 403)
  • "The office has switched this off." (feature_not_licensed, 403) and "The office licence is read only right now. Tell the office." (licence_read_only, 403): ask your manager, then press Send again.
  • "That record has been removed." (404): discard the item.
  • "The office system refused this (code {status})." Read the words after it, or ask the office.
