Getting started 4: Set up a backup place
Choose where backups go, make your 24-word recovery kit, and consider the optional Vault.
Updated Nov 2, 2026
This step is optional, and we recommend it. A computer can be lost or break. A backup in another place gets your books back.
Choose a place
- Open the menu with your name, then choose Health and recovery.
- Open Off-site backups and choose Add a place: an external drive, a network folder or a cloud-drive folder.
- Choose how many daily, weekly and monthly copies to keep.
The app can test-restore the newest copy and warns you when the last good copy is old.
Make your recovery kit
- In Health and recovery, open Recovery kit and choose Make my recovery kit.
- Write down the 24 words, or print the kit page. They are shown once.
- Type back the words you are asked for, then choose Switch the kit on.
Keep the words away from this computer. Nobody can recover them for you.
Pop Books Vault (optional)
Pop Books Vault keeps your newest three backups of each company on the Pop Books website. Every backup is locked on your computer first, so nobody at Pop Books can read it. It is free for the first year with a paid licence, then $29 a year per licence (regional prices apply). To restore on a new computer you sign in with your account email, then unlock with your 24 words, or with a Vault password if you set one. Turn it on under Backups, in the Pop Books Vault tab.
