Checked against Pop Dispatch 0.1.0

Pop Dispatch can copy a Canadian tax template into your tax rates. You will be able to load the rate for your province, keep it as your own rate and print every tax and every registration number on your invoices.

Before you start #

You need the owner or manager role and the country set to Canada. See "Setting up for Canada". Rates change, so read the official source shown with each template before you load it.

The templates #

TemplateTaxes on the invoice
Canada: GST onlyGST 5%
OntarioHST 13%
New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward IslandHST 15%
Nova ScotiaHST 14%
British ColumbiaGST 5% and PST 7%
SaskatchewanGST 5% and PST 6%
ManitobaGST 5% and PST 7%
QuebecGST 5% and QST 9.975%

Each template shows its sources, the official pages of the Canada Revenue Agency, Revenu Quebec and the province, and the day they were read (2 November 2026). Nova Scotia lowered its HST from 15% to 14% on 1 April 2025. QST is worked on the price without GST, so the two taxes sit side by side and neither compounds the other.

Steps #

  1. Open Business settings and select Tax. Find the card Tax templates for Canada.
  2. Tick the template for your province and open its sources to read the rate.
  3. Tick I have read the rates and sources and want to load the ticked templates.
  4. Select Load templates. The page shows "Loaded. The rates are now in your tax rates." The rate appears in the Tax rates table with its parts, for example "GST 5% + QST 9.975%".
  5. In Default tax rate for each kind of line, choose that rate for the kinds of line you tax, for example Tow, Labor and Part.
  6. In Tax registration numbers, choose a Kind (GST/HST, QST or PST), type the Number and select Save. For PST type the province code, for example BC. A business registered in several provinces adds one PST number for each.
  7. Finalise an invoice. The invoice page and the printed invoice show one row for each tax with its label and amount, and each registration number below the totals.

A business that works in more than one province loads the template for each province and attaches it to a location. See "Sales tax in several states".

Technical details
  • Loading calls POST /settings/tax-templates/load with codes and confirm: true. A request without confirm is refused.
  • A loaded rate is an ordinary tax rate. You can turn it off, change its default or add a new rate when a rate changes. Invoices already issued keep the rate they were taxed at.
  • QST is stored as an exact rate of 9.975%. Tax is rounded half up for each tax on the invoice total, or on each line when "Round tax" is set to "On every line".
  • Registration numbers print with the catalogue labels "GST/HST registration no.", "QST registration no." and "PST registration no.".

If something goes wrong #

  • "Read the rates and sources, then send confirm true": tick the confirmation box before loading.
  • The rate shows as already loaded: the template is in your tax rates; change it there.
  • An invoice shows no tax: choose a default rate for the line kind, then finalise again before any payment.
