Checked against Pop Dispatch 0.1.0

A business that works in more than one state or province charges the tax of the place where the work or the tow happened. You will be able to enter one combined rate for each place and let Pop Dispatch pick it for every invoice.

Before you start #

You need the owner or manager role. Pop Dispatch ships no table of US rates, because state, county and city rates change often. Get each combined rate (state plus local) from the tax office of the state or from your accountant, and enter it yourself. Rates may have up to four decimals, for example 8.375.

Steps #

  1. Open Business settings and select Tax. In Add a tax rate, add one rate for each place: a code such as TX-AUSTIN, a label such as "Sales tax 8.25%", the Rate in percent and, if you like, the Country code and Region code.
  2. In Default tax rate for each kind of line, choose your home rate for the kinds of line you tax. A kind with no default stays untaxed in every place.
  3. In Tax by location, choose a Location, or choose "New location" and type its name. Choose the Region code (a state or province) and the tax rate for that place. Select Save.
  4. Repeat for each place you work in. Remove a row with Remove.
  5. In Tax registration numbers, add your seller's permit or registration number for each state: choose "Sales tax permit no.", type the state code and the number.

Pop Dispatch picks the rate for an invoice in this order:

  1. The location stored on the invoice (POST /invoices/:id/site).
  2. The state or province of the pickup address of the tow or job on the invoice, matched against the Region code of your rows.
  3. Your default rate for the kind of line.

The picked rate replaces the default for every kind of line that has one. A rate you set on a single line stays as set.

Technical details
  • The table is location_tax_rates, keyed by location_id from the shared locations table; the towing rule packs use the same id.
  • The place counts when the invoice is finalised. A finalised invoice keeps its tax.
  • Which place counts as the sale for each state is the operator's to confirm with that state.

If something goes wrong #

  • A job is taxed at the home rate: its pickup address has no state code, or no row has that code. Add the row, or set the location on the invoice before finalising.
  • "The invoice is already finalised": its tax stays as issued; void the invoice and make a new one when the place was wrong.
  • A rate you want is missing from the list: add it in Add a tax rate first.
