The Owner account step creates the account that can see and change everything. It then shows a recovery key, which opens your data if the key stored on this computer is ever lost, and it sets up an authenticator app for the six-digit code you type at each sign-in. Passkeys arrive in a later version. Once the owner account exists, setup closes to anyone who is signed out.
Before you start #
Have your name and your email address ready. Choose a password of at least 10 characters. Have an authenticator app installed on your phone.
Steps #

- Type your Your name, Email, and Password. Type the same password again in Type the password again.
- Select Create account. The page shows "Owner account created."
- Under "Save your recovery key", the key appears once. Select Copy the key or Save as a file. Store the key somewhere away from this computer.
- Confirm with I saved the recovery key once the key is stored.
- Under "Set up the authenticator app", open the authenticator app on your phone and scan the QR code picture. If you cannot scan the picture, type the key shown under Or type this key into the app.
- Type the six-digit code the app shows into Six-digit code, then select Check the code. The page shows "Authenticator app is on."
- Continue to What you run.
Technical details
- The password is stored with argon2id, a password hashing method.
- The recovery key is shown once. Store it safely. The Vault and recovery key article explains how it is used.
- The QR code and the typed key hold the same authenticator secret. Either one sets up the same app entry.
- After the owner account exists, setup asks anyone who is signed out to sign in as the owner first. Answers given so far stay saved.
- Passkeys come in a later version. The authenticator app is the second step for owners.
If something goes wrong #
- The two passwords differ. The page says "The two passwords are different." Type the same password in both boxes.
- The password is too short. Use at least 10 characters.
- The code is refused. Type the code the app shows at that moment, without spaces. If it still fails, check that the phone's date and time are set automatically.
- The recovery key is lost before it is saved. Read the Vault and recovery key article before you continue with setup.
