The Country and currency section holds the formats your whole business uses. You will be able to set them once and see every figure, date and tax number in the form your business expects.

Before you start #

You need the owner or manager role. Choose the country first when nothing is saved yet, because the first save applies that country's starting values.

Steps #

  1. Open Business settings and select Country and currency. The form shows the values saved now.
  2. Type the Country code: two letters, for example US, CA, IN or GB. For Canada see "Setting up for Canada".
  3. Type the Currency code: three letters, for example USD or INR. When an invoice or payment exists, the field shows "The currency is locked because an invoice or payment exists."
  4. Type the Time zone, for example America/New_York or Asia/Kolkata.
  5. Choose the Console language: English or हिन्दी.
  6. Choose the Distance unit (Miles or Kilometres) and the Volume unit (Litres, US gallons or UK gallons).
  7. Choose the Date order (Month, day, year; Day, month, year; or Year, month, day) and the Clock (12 hour or 24 hour).
  8. Choose the Digit grouping: 1,234,567 or 12,34,567.
  9. Choose the day the Week starts on: Sunday, Monday or Saturday.
  10. Choose the Tax number type (None, US EIN, India GSTIN, UK VAT number or Other) and type the Tax number.
  11. Choose Round tax: "Once per invoice, by rate" or "On every line". Tick Prices already include tax when your prices contain tax.
  12. Select Save. The page shows "Saved". The console switches to the language you chose at once.

Only fields you changed are sent. A save with no changes shows "Saved" and sends nothing.

Technical details
  • The form reads and writes /settings/locale. The first save also sends the country as preset, which fills the starting values for that country.
  • A field with a problem is marked, and the message names the field that the server refused.
  • Tax rounding and tax-inclusive prices apply to invoices finalised after the change. See "Tax rates and invoice tax".
  • Units are display choices. Stored figures stay in canonical units. See "Units and currency".

If something goes wrong #

  • A field is marked with an error: check the country is two letters, the currency three letters and the time zone a valid name.
  • The currency will not change: an invoice or payment exists, so the currency is locked.
  • The page says you cannot open settings: your role is neither owner nor manager.
